Moss on your roof isn’t just unsightly — it holds moisture against tiles, causes frost damage and blocks gutters. We remove it safely using the right method for your roof type.
Roof Cleaning
Moss holds moisture against roof tiles like a sponge. In winter that moisture freezes, expands and gradually cracks the tiles — a process that accelerates year after year if the moss is left in place. Moss and debris washing down into gutters is also one of the leading causes of gutter blockages and subsequent damp problems across Hertfordshire.
St Albans Jet Washing removes moss, algae and lichen from all roof types across St Albans and Hertfordshire using appropriate techniques — manual scraping with telescopic tools, soft washing with biocide solutions, or a combination of both depending on the roof type. We never use high-pressure jet washing directly on roof tiles, which can dislodge mortar, crack fragile tiles and void roofing guarantees.

Surfaces we clean
Moss is removed from tiles using appropriate methods — manual telescopic scraping for concrete tiles, soft washing for more fragile surfaces. We never use high pressure directly on tiles.
After removal, a specialist biocide is applied to kill remaining moss spores and algae and prevent regrowth. This continues working for months after the clean and significantly slows re-colonisation.
Dislodged moss goes straight into the gutters. We clear and flush gutters as part of every roof clean — we don't leave the job half done.
While on the roof we carry out a visual inspection and report any cracked tiles, loose ridge mortar or damaged flashings we spot. We won't charge to flag a problem.
