Block Paving Re-sand & Seal

Cleaning your block paving without re-sanding is only half the job.

Jet washing is the most effective way to clean block paving — but it also flushes out the kiln-dried sand in the joints. Without that sand, the blocks become unstable and start to move, weeds push through the gaps almost immediately, and water penetrates under the surface more easily. A clean drive that hasn’t been re-sanded looks good for a few weeks, then quickly deteriorates.

St Albans Jet Washing offers block paving re-sanding and sealing as an add-on to every driveway and patio clean. We re-sand the joints with fresh kiln-dried sand to stabilise the surface, then apply a quality sealant to lock the sand in, repel water and oil, and keep the surface looking cleaner and better protected for years.

Surfaces we clean

Re-sanding and sealing
works on all block paving types.

Whether it’s a traditional clay block drive or a modern concrete paver patio, re-sanding and sealing is the same essential finishing step.

01

Concrete block paving

The most common block paving in Hertfordshire. Kiln-dried sand re-sanding followed by sealant keeps it stable and protected.

Most common

02

Clay block paving
Natural clay pavers are porous and benefit significantly from sealing. Enhances the natural colour without looking plastic.

Period properties

03

Tumbled block paving
Rounded edges and irregular surfaces can look great sealed — enhances the aged appearance without dulling the character.

Popular in new builds

04

Cobbles and setts
Traditional cobbles and granite setts can be re-pointed and sealed. We advise on the most appropriate product for the material.

05

Pattern imprinted concrete
PIC surfaces are sealed rather than re-sanded. Resealing restores colour vibrancy and protects the pattern from wear and UV fading.

Seal only

06

Patio block paving
Not just for driveways. Patio block paving benefits from exactly the same re-sanding and sealing treatment as driveway surfaces.

Kiln-dried sand re-sanding

Fresh kiln-dried polymeric sand is brushed into all joints across the whole surface. This stabilises the blocks, fills any gaps, and provides the base for the sealant to adhere to.

Full surface sealant application

A quality block paving sealant is applied across the entire surface. This locks in the jointing sand, repels water and oil, makes the surface easier to maintain and significantly slows weed and algae regrowth.

TITLE: Edge and border joints

We re-sand all joints — including edges, borders and kerb lines, which are often neglected in cheaper jobs. A re-sand that misses the edges is a re-sand half done.

Aftercare advice

We'll tell you how long to keep the surface dry before use, what the sealant covers and doesn't cover, and when to expect full cure. A proper handover is part of every job.

Common questions about
driveway cleaning in Hertfordshire.

Common questions about our block paving re-sanding and sealing service across St Albans and Hertfordshire.

Do I need to re-sand after jet washing?

Yes — jet washing flushes the jointing sand from the gaps between blocks. Without re-sanding, the blocks become unstable, weeds push through within weeks and the surface deteriorates much faster. Re-sanding is the essential finishing step after any block paving clean.
A quality block paving sealant applied correctly typically lasts 3–5 years in normal conditions. Driveways with heavy vehicle traffic or very exposed aspects may need resealing sooner. We use proven professional-grade products — not the cheap sealants that peel and discolour.
We recommend keeping foot traffic off the sealed surface for at least 4 hours, and vehicle traffic off for at least 24 hours. In cooler or damp weather, we’ll advise allowing longer. We always give clear aftercare guidance before we leave.
We can seal a driveway that has been properly cleaned recently, but we’ll need to assess the surface first. Sealing over a dirty or algae-affected surface traps the contamination underneath and ruins the result. If it needs cleaning first, we’ll say so — and we’ll quote for both.
We use both wet-look and natural-finish sealants depending on your preference. Wet-look gives a richer, more vibrant colour — popular on traditional clay blocks. Natural finish maintains the existing appearance while still providing full protection. We’ll advise on which suits your surface best.
